Senckenberg Research Institute, Wilhelmshaven
The research station in Wilhelmshaven was inaugurated in 1928. It was originally founded under the name “Senckenberg” – Research Station for Marine Geology” by Prof. Dr. Rudolf Richter, the Director of the Department of Geology and Head of Geology/Palaeontology at the Johann Wolfgang Goethe University in Frankfurt a. M.
The name of the station was expanded in 1929 by adding “and Palaeontology” and was later to become known under the short title “Senckenberg by the Sea”. The idea was to have a permanent research facility on the coast of the North Sea in order to study modern geological and palaeontological processes and products with the aim of improving interpretations of the rock record. Under the motto “the present is the key to the past”, the principle of actualism was to be applied systematically in the field. Later on, an additional department for marine biology was created.
Today, the Wilhelmhaven location, which is often called "Senckenberg at the sea", hosts two departments: The oceanography department and the German Centre for Research in Marine Biodiversity (DZMB). The department for maine biology is located in Frankfurt.
