Projects - ESONET
ESONET Network of Excellence
ESONET is short for European Seafloor Observatory Network. Objective of this EU funded project is to create a network of research institutions and businesses experienced in deep sea research and long-term data monitoring. From 2007 to 2011, the following issues of scientific relevance will be explored:
Which data is especially important to science, where and how is it best measured? Which infrastructure is already in place? Which technologies are available? 50 research groups from all over Europe will be working on finding answers to these questions. The EU is supporting them with 7 million Euros in funding. Up to now, 12 sites in European coastal waters have been chosen as locations for seafloor observatories, based on their unique geological, biological and oceanographic properties. Key research areas include causes and results of climate change, seaquakes and their effects as well as biogeochemical processes and their effects on the marine ecosystem.
Within the ESONET network, European research groups are currently teaming up to conduct demonstration missions. Plans are that once the seafloor observatories are in operation, researchers and others interested in the matter will be able to access the data over the Internet at any time.
