Marine Geosciences (CAU)
The study program offers specializations in coastal geology, marine geochemistry, paleoclimate research and marine resources.
M.Sc. "Marine Geosciences" is an internationally oriented, state-of-the-art graduate program, which focuses on the latest developments in marine geosciences and technology, in particular in the areas marine coastal geology, past climates, biogeochemistry and paleoecology. This degree should provide students with the knowledge of fundamental terms of geological, biological, geochemical and physical processes in the ocean. One of objectives is to combine theoretical studies with applied research and hands-on experience. As a result of extensive marine sciences spectrum at the University of Kiel, the program offers an insight into modern research topics. The graduate will be able to create and critically assess scientific results and to plan, carry out and evaluate ship and laboratory projects independently.
It builds upon the basic knowledge in natural and geological sciences as it is provided in a B.Sc. in Geosciences. In the master's program the necessary qualifications for independent processing of scientific problems will be acquired, whereas the synergy of data acquisition, processing and interpretation, at see and in the lab, as well as the numerical simulations and modelling with application of geo-information systems is in the foreground.
A finished Master's degree in Marine Geosciences should enable the alumni to take jobs in industry and administrative authorities both in Germany and abroad. There is also a global demand for graduates with marine geoscientific expertise in the field of academic research due to the growing need for understanding ocean's role in Earth's system and climate change. The international focus of the program will give the graduates an advantage and a chance to successfully compete for positions worldwide.
