Prof Zielinski on the Science Council

Oliver Zielinski - Director of the Leibniz Institute for Baltic Sea Research Warnemünde, Professor of Earth System Research at the University of Rostock and Vice-Chairman of KDM - was appointed to the Science Council on 1 February 2025 by Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier on the joint proposal of the German Research Foundation, the Max Planck Society, the German Rectors' Conference, the Helmholtz Association, the Fraunhofer Society and the Leibniz Association. The appointment is for an initial period of three years.

The German Council of Science and Humanities is the highest advisory body to the Federal Government and the governments of the federal states on scientific matters. Specifically, the Science Council advises on research policy issues and plays a central role in marine research. It makes strategic recommendations (e.g. on the future of research infrastructures such as research vessels), networks scientific institutions and supports international cooperation. It also helps to tackle societal challenges such as climate change in a scientifically sound manner and ensures the quality of marine research in Germany.

KDM welcomes the appointment and wishes Prof Zielinski a successful term of office!
