KDM supports young talent events at the
3rd UN Ocean Conference in Nice
From 9 to 13 June 2025, political decision-makers, science, civil society and business gathered in Nice for the third UN Ocean Conference (UNOC) with the aim of advancing the protection and sustainable use of the ocean. KDM was on site with numerous representatives and helped shape key debates on the topics of coastal resilience, young scientists and intergenerational cooperation.
Together with the DAM, KDM organised the Virtual Early Career Ocean Professionals (V.ECOP) Days for the third time. Over two and a half days, young ocean researchers from over 35 countries came together in Nice and online to present their work, networks and initiatives. KDM and DAM members were also active at a large number of events. In particular at the RV Meteor organised by Germany, where the contributions of German marine research were presented to an international audience throughout the week.
The conference also provided an opportunity for direct political dialogue. Jonathan Heimer (Scientific Officer at KDM) had the opportunity to address the Member States directly in the plenary session, welcoming the EU Ocean Pact and emphasising the need for increased intergenerational cooperation for peaceful scientific cooperation.
German marine research was also strongly represented in Nice. Various KDM members organised side events or held talks with decision-makers, including a direct exchange with EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.
