BBNJ Briefing | 24 Nov 2023

On 24 November 2023 from 2 - 3pm CET (1 - 2pm UTC), AIR Centre Portugal and KDM are organising an information session on the Agreement under the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea for the Conservation and Sustainable Use of Marine Biodiversity in the High Seas (BBNJ) and its potential impact on science and scientific capacity building.

The BBNJ Convention is the most important international agreement on the protection and use of marine life on the high seas since the signing of the Convention on the Law of the Sea in 1982. The aim is to protect marine biodiversity, ensure sustainable use and at the same time promote justice. The treaty was agreed in New York in September 2023 and is the result of more than a decade of intergovernmental negotiations. In the coming years, this agreement is expected to have a significant impact on marine biological research. With this event, we would like to contribute to a better understanding of the treaty in the scientific community and initiate a discussion on the role of the community in the implementation of the treaty.

The event will be moderated by Dr Yekaterina Astafyeva (KDM).

The event can be organised on Youtube can be viewed both live and retrospectively via the window below.
