Briese Prize for Marine Research

The shipping company Briese Schiffahrts GmbH & Co. KG (Leer) has been awarding the "BRIESE Prize for Marine Research" together with the Leibniz Institute for Baltic Sea Research Warnemünde (IOW) since 2010.

The prize, which is awarded annually, is intended to honour outstanding doctoral theses in marine research whose results are particularly closely related to the use of research vessels and the use and development of technology and/or data collection at sea. A primary criterion for the award is the scope of the scientific knowledge gained in the course of the work. The award comes with prize money of €5,000.

Researchers whose doctorate was completed no more than 2 years ago at a German university and was evaluated as "very good" or "with distinction" are eligible to apply. All disciplines of marine research, including marine technology and climate research, are invited to apply. Applications are made directly by the applicant.

The deadline for applications for the Briese Prize 2021 is 31 October 2021.

Applications should be sent to the IOW:
